Obituary of Richard James Brown

"Brimfield, Richard J. Brown, 82, of Brookfield Road died Tuesday in Harrington Hospital, Southbridge. Born in Palmer, Feb. 1, 1919, he was the son of the late J. Walter & Bertha (Parker) Brown. He was a lifelong resident and the last of a family of five children. Mr. Brown was a comptroller for 21 years at Early American Inns and Yankee Pedlar Inn in Holyoke, retiring 1981. He attended Brimfield Public Schools and graduated from Hitchcock Free Academy, class of 1937. He later attended New England School of Accounting in Worcester, graduating in June 1949. An Army veteran of WWII, he served in the Persian Gulf Service Command Transportation Corps. Richard was a member of the First Congregational Church of Brimfield for 66 years, serving on many boards and committees, including 26 years as treasurer. He was a trustee of Hitchcock free Academy for 50 years, and honorary trustee after retiring. He served during the time of the academy’s transition from school to community center. During his tenure, he served on most committees and held many offices. He was treasurer for 14 years. His wife of 31 years, the former Harriet E. Tarbell died in 1980. He is survived by a son Thomas J., with whom he lived and daughter, Marilyn E. Sherris and a grandaughter, Laura Sherris, all of Brimfield. He also leaves nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be Sunday, January 27 at 2:00 p.m.at the church. The family will receive friends on Friday, January 18 from 5:00—7:00 p.m. at the BEERS & STORY PALMER FUNERAL HOME. Burial will be a the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, he has requested that donations be made in his memory to either the First Congregational Church, Box 203 or Hitchcock Free Academy, Box 155, both in Brimfield, 01010"
