Obituary of Carl M. Mortensen

Carl Merton (Mert) Mortensen, age 96, a resident of Holyoke MA (formerly of Chicopee and Woburn MA) died peacefully on Thursday, July 2, 2020 at Renaissance Manor on Cabot in Holyoke, after a brief period of declining health. He was the husband of Marjorie L. Mortensen. Their 70th wedding anniversary would have been this autumn. 
Carl was born in 1924, the eldest son of the late Carl and Esther (Haskell) Mortensen.  He was a US Navy Veteran having served aboard the USS Essex aircraft carrier in WWII. In March, 2010 Carl was proud to participate in an Honor Flight trip to Washington, D.C. for WWII Veterans.  Prior to the War, he was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCCs) established by Congress to provide jobs for young, unemployed men during the Great Depression.  
Carl worked as a Sales Engineer in Lowell for 31 years.  A loyal Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots fan, he enjoyed playing cards, crossword puzzles, visiting local libraries and the camaraderie among friends. 
He is survived by his wife Marjorie, two daughters Sara Jane Mutch of South Hadley and Amy L. Rice (Timothy) of Northborough, two granddaughters Rebecca Mutch Salce (Marco) and Elizabeth J. Rice, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Eugene A. Mortensen and Lyman R. Mortensen, and four sisters, Virginia L. Brison, Priscilla A. Jones, Grace M. Mortensen and Marion R. Mortensen, and his son-in-law David A. Mutch. 
A private memorial service with Military Honors will be followed by interment at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne, MA.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Friends of the South Hadley Public Library, 2 Canal Street, South Hadley, MA 01075.
