Obituary of Ian H. McGee

South Hadley - Ian H. McGee, 84, died on April 11, 2021, at Vero Health and Rehab, Hampden, after an illness.  The son of the late Alan V. and Katharine H. McGee of South Hadley and Granby, Massachusetts, Ian was born in New Haven, Connecticut, and educated in the South Hadley schools. He graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy and from Princeton University with a BA in history. Upon graduating from Princeton, he taught history for four years in Harrisburg and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He then attended the Institute of Fine Arts at New York University, studying medieval art history.

A lifelong musician, during college summers in Greensboro, Vermont, Ian was on the Music Committee for the Sunday night lake concerts. Ian studied organ at Princeton and then at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Philadelphia with Wesley Day and was a member of the American Guild of Organists. He was a member of the choir, and then for over 17 years served as organist/music director, at All Saints' Episcopal Church, South Hadley.  

He is survived by a sister, Susan Meyer and her husband, Merritt, of Bristol, RI, and several cousins and their families.  

Arrangements are in care of the Beers and Story South Hadley Funeral Home.  Visiting hours and flowers are respectfully omitted. Memorial gifts may be made to All Saints' Episcopal Church, South Hadley.  An online memorial service is being held on Saturday, May 8th at 10:00 a.m.; contact the parish office at 413-532-8917 for information.
