Obituary of Walter L. Kenney

Walter L. “Walt” Kenney, Jr. passed away peacefully at his home in Wilbraham on May 14, 2021, surrounded by his loving family. He died short of his 92nd Birthday. Walt was born in Loveland, OH to the late Walter and Reva (Stacy) Kenney and was also predeceased by his older brother, John R. Kenney and by his grandson, Timothy “Timmy” Sanderford.

Walt joined the U.S. Army when he was 17 and became a paratrooper in the 11th Airborne Division. His unit was assigned to the occupation of Japan following the end of WWII. In civilian life, he excelled in the textile industry, serving in key executive positions with worldwide responsibilities. He retired from Wm. E. Wright Co. in West Warren, MA as Corporate V.P. and President of its Ribbon Operations.

Walt loved sports and had a big heart for animals. He had a hearty laugh and an Irish twinkle in his eyes. Walt set an example of integrity and perseverance for everybody who knew him, and he took on life’s challenges with confidence and courage. He was generous, strong-willed and lived life with courage to the very end.

Walt leaves to cherish his memory and will be greatly missed by his loving wife, Elly, whom he met in Switzerland 47 years ago; his two caring daughters, Diane Sanderford and her husband David Sanderford of North Carolina and Barbara Kenney-Snuffin and her husband Dr. William Snuffin of Virginia; along with six grandchildren, Ben Sanderford and wife Farley, Luke Sanderford, Durham Snuffin and wife Christina, Morgan Snuffin, Jenavieve Snuffin and Preston Snuffin and wife Kimberly; as well as five great-grandchildren. Walt is also survived by his younger sister Betty Groomes, sister-in-law Paula Kenney and many nieces, nephews and their families, as well as former foster child and long-time family friend Donald Mitchell who provided invaluable care in Walt’s final days. His family would also like to thank the employees of Baystate Hospice for their loving and dedicated care during Walt’s final weeks.

Services will be private. Memorial contributions may be made in Walt’s name to Second Congregational Church, 1080 Pleasant Street, Palmer, MA 01069. Beers & Story Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements.
