Jose Pangan, Jr., M.D.

Obituary of Jose Carlos Pangan, Jr., M.D.

South Hadley/Ware-Jose C. Pangan, Jr. died peacefully surrounded by family in Wilbraham, MA on August 30, 2021. He was born on July 20, 1935, in the town of Apalit, in the province of Pampanga, Philippines. He grew up in Apalit and went to the public elementary school there. Then, he went to Manila, Philippines to attend the University of Santo Tomas, starting from high school through medical school, where he got a medical degree in 1959. He subsequently went to the United States where he served as an intern, resident and fellow in general surgery and fellow in head and neck surgery at Kings County Hospital in Brooklyn, NY for 7 years. He was certified by the American Board of Surgery in 1967. He became a fellow of the American College of Surgeons in 1969.

After his training, he returned back to Manila, Philippines to start a private practice in general surgery and became a faculty member in surgery at the College of Medicine at the University of Santo Tomas. But when President Ferdinand Marcos declared martial law in the Philippines in 1972, he decided to immigrate to the United States with his wife, Dr. Josefina Abalos Pangan, and their four children. They settled in Ware, MA, where he practiced general surgery at Mary Lane Hospital, and stayed there until 1998. He was an avid photographer of nature and people, loved spending time with his family and friends, and often would take in the arts at a local theater or museum.

After retirement, he and his wife moved to South Hadley, MA in 1999, and then they moved to Wilbraham, MA in 2019 to an assisted living facility. He is survived by his beloved wife, Josefina, and his four children along with their spouses: Patricia Pangan Petrosky and husband Gregory Petrosky; Eduardo Pangan and wife Wasana Phongsanarakul Pangan; Antonio Pangan and wife Aileen Lorenzo Pangan; and Michael Pangan and wife Patricia Juhn Pangan. He also leaves his 10 grandchildren: Evan, Luke, Julia, Matthew, Wyatt, Grant, Nick, Emmett, Sofia and Samuel.
