Obituary of Matthew R Downing

South Hadley - Matthew R. Downing, 42, passed away unexpectedly in his sleep at home on Jan. 8, 2022. Born in Holyoke, MA on Feb. 12, 1979, son of James and Karen Downing of South Hadley. He is also survived by a brother, James Downing and his wife Amy of S. Hadley and extended family members. Matt was raised in S. Hadley and was a graduate of S. Hadley High School class of 1997. Matt played varsity football as "Center" for four years, known by the team and coaches as "The Crusher". The team won the Suburban League against Northampton in 1997 on Thanksgiving Day for the big trophy. After high school Matt attended Holyoke Community College and then started his own landscape company. He also worked for Western Builders, Appleton Corp and Republic Iron works, to name a few. Matt was a member of the Boy Scout Troop 303 of S. Hadley and past member of the Fairview Sportsmen's Club. Matt will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2022 from 9:00-11:00 am followed by a service at 11:00 am at the Beers & Story South Hadley Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Notre Dame Cemetery.
