Professor Peterson was a warm and supportive mentor and then colleague for me throughout my career, and I am so sorry to hear of his passing. I first met him in 1999 when I attended a summer REU at Mount Holyoke in applied math. We were modeling fluid flow and looking for chaos. Professor Peterson taught us fluid dynamics and how to code for the summer. He was a consistent positive presence during the frustrations of research. At the end of the summer, I made a mix tape for him, as people were prone to do for those they were fond of in the 90's. I also continued to do research in fluids for my senior year and senior thesis when I returned to Wellesley for the 1999-2000 academic year. Professor Peterson was a continued support through that work, as well.
In 2007, I returned to the Pioneer Valley as a professor of physics at UMass. I was excited to be able to collaborate and work with Professor Peterson through the five colleges. We met several times to discuss science questions. Since Professor Peterson was such a Renaissance man - knowing about lots of topics, my work in biological physics was still relevant to his interests. Honestly, he was so steadfast a presence in my life since 1999, that it was a shock to consider him leaving this world.
My heart goes out to Indira. I hope that hearing about how Mark has touched, mentored, coached, guided, and cared for so many of us is a comfort to you. I am so, so sorry for your losses.

Mark was like an older academic brother. Quick to smile and even quicker to get excited about stuff. We co supervised a student project on roll waves. Mark was a true academic - always curious and always interested in helping. He was positive and generous / a dedicated educator. I will miss your positivity!

I have always been happy to see Mark at the Physics department open house during reunion because it was clear he was happy to see the alumnae who came back and hear about their new experiences. I sometimes wondered if he was considering his next adventure. His kindness with be in my memory always.

My heart breaks over this tremendous loss. I pray that Mark’s family find some comfort in knowing he touched so many lives. As an alum from MHC, who majored in mathematics, I have so many fond memories. Professor Peterson had such a kind heart and easy manner. I graduated over twenty years ago, yet still cherish the long conversations I had with him. His memory will always live on.

This brilliant obituary provides a glimpse into the marvelous person we knew as Mark Peterson. His intelligence was astounding. Far from being a one-sided intellect, Mark had the capacity to become a true renaissance man, enriching the world through his many capacities. On top of that, he interacted with compassion, love, and good humor. I am humbled that he was my friend. My deep condolences to his family.
