Obituary of G. Catherine Turner

South Hadley-G. Catherine (O'Connor) Turner, 87, passed away January 10, 2023. Born November 7, 1935 in Holyoke, she was the daughter of Leo J. and Gertrude V. (Hindle) O'Connor. Cathy grew up and lived most of her life in South Hadley. She was a communicant of St. Theresa's Church and started her working career as a mathematician at Aberdeen Proving Ground MD and Patrick AFB Fl. She was proud of her contribution to the space program and the mercury rocket platform. Cathy furthered her education, obtaining her BS from UMass Amherst and Masters in Mathematics from Wesleyan University. At the time of her retirement in 1995, she was Chair of the Math Department, where she had worked at the South Hadley High School for 32 years. In her later years, Cathy was a member of the South Hadley Council on Aging and enjoyed traveling, reading and created many elaborate stained glass projects. She was an avid Mah Jongg player at the South Hadley Council on Aging. She is survived by two sons, John "Jack" Turner of South Hadley and Christopher Turner of Edgewater, FL along with her sister Mary Boulais of South Hadley, two grandchildren and four step great grandchildren. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her daughter, Rebecca O'Connor in 2006 and brothers, Robert and Thomas O'Connor. A graveside service will be held Thursday, January 19th at 10:00 a.m. at St. Rose Cemetery. Beers & Story S.Hadley Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to the S.Hadley Council on Aging.
