Obituary of Vernon E. Wheeler

Belchertown- Vernon E. Wheeler, 83, passed away June 20, 2023. He was born on September 22, 1939 in Scioto County, Ohio to the late Shelby and Mary (Gallion) Wheeler. After graduating high school in Ohio, Vernon honorably served his country in the United States Army, deploying in multiple tours to Vietnam, Korea, and Germany. After 22 years of faithful service, Vernon retired from the Army as a SFC in 1978. Returning to Ohio, Vernon began a new career as the Manager of Lowe's and held this position for another 20 years before retiring.

Vernon was a distinguished Master Carpenter and worked on many projects throughout his lifetime. After relocating to Belchertown in 1987, Vernon built his family's home from the ground up. He once again began a new career with Wright Mills.

In his leisure, Vernon enjoyed fishing and golfing. Having learned the sport of golf in his 50's, Vernon had natural talent and won many trophies. He was also a gifted photographer and photojournalist. Vernon was a member of the VFW Post 8428 in Belchertown, and played an integral role in reestablishing the post.

Besides his parents, Vernon was preceded in death by his step-son, William Yelinek, Jr., in 2016. He will be dearly missed by his beloved wife of 51 years, Christine (Squires) Wheeler; children, Victoria and husband John, Richard and wife Michelle, and Gregory; siblings, Jewel, Charlotte, Buryl and his wife Carol; grandchildren, Kaelyn, Madeline, and Shannon; as well as many nieces, nephews, and extended family.

Visitation will be held on July 7, 2023 from 9:30-11:30am at the Beers & Story Belchertown Funeral Home. Burial will immediately follow in South Cemetery. Donations in Vernon's name can be made to the Belchertown VFW Post 8428, PO Bx 650, Belchertown, MA. 01007.
