Obituary of Peter G. Thorpe

Peter G. Thorpe, 90, of Belchertown, Massachusetts passed away October 28, 2023, at Baystate Wing Hospital. He was born on November 20, 1932, in Holyoke to Francis L. and Aniela E. (Cenarowna) Thorpe. Peter was raised in Holyoke and has resided in Belchertown for the last 40 years, moving here shortly after serving in the Air Force, on active duty, from 1952 - 1978. Peter served in multiple locations to include Africa and Thailand. He was actively involved in reconnaissance during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Peter has volunteered innumerable hours to the town of Belchertown Veterans with the American Legion Post 239 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8428. Currently, he was the Past Commander and Adjutant of the Legion Post 239. Peter also participated in over 200 burial ceremonies as a volunteer at the Veterans' Memorial Cemetery in Agawam, MA. Peter was honorably named as the reciprocate of Belchertown's 2023 Hometown Hero Award for his dedication to his country as a Veteran, Active Duty, and National Guard/Reservist. Peter loved hiking in the Quabbin Reservoir and was an avid member of the National Audobon Society. He loved to travel with his wife Sutin, they were able to travel to many different countries. He will be deeply missed by his wife Sutin Thorpe of Belchertown. He is also survived by six nieces and nephews, Richard, Gary, David, Laurie Charpentier, Andrew Gablik and Bettina Moore; and many great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews. All services will be privately held at the convenience of the family at the Mass. Veterans' Memorial Cemetery. Donations can be made in Peter's memory to the VFW of Belchertown.
