Nellie Cabot

Obituary of Nellie Cabot

Nellie (Holotko) Cabot of South Hadley, a loving mother, devoted grandmother, and cherished member of the community, passed away peacefully at the age of 98 on Tuesday, April 16, 2024. She was born on April 14, 1926, in New York City, New York, to the late Ignatz and Anna (Dubik) Holotko and was raised in the Bronx.

She went on to marry the love of her life, Paul John Cabot, in 1949 in New York and together they relocated to Springfield, MA, where they built a beautiful life together raising their family. They later moved to South Hadley, MA where she had resided until 2022. Nellie and Paul did everything together and especially enjoyed golfing, travel, dancing and hosting family gatherings.

Nellie and Paul were together for 59 years until his passing in 2008. Nellie was also predeceased by her brother, John Holotko, of Crestwood, NY.

Nellie was a lifelong learner and a graduate of Hunter College, NY, earning her Bachelor of Arts degree in 1948. Later in life she attended classes at Western New England College and also studied art at the Springfield adult evening school.

A longtime member of South Church in Springfield, Nellie found solace and strength in her faith and community involvement. Family was the cornerstone of Nellie's life, and she was immensely proud of her three beloved sons: Gary Cabot of Chicopee, MA, Wayne Cabot and his wife Susan of Clarksville, MD, and Alan Cabot and his partner Cynthia Overgaag of West Springfield, MA. Her grandchildren, Sarah, Melissa, Alexander, Monica, Christopher, and Bryan and great granddaughter Izabel were her pride and joy, and they held a very special place in her heart.

In addition to her dedication to her family, Nellie had a passion for numerous hobbies, including playing card games, scrabble, reading, golf, painting, crocheting beautiful Afghans for family members and gardening. Nellie had a quick wit with a dry sense of humor and was an avid storyteller of her youth and adventures. Her strength of character was greatly admired and set an influential example in the lives of those close to her.

Nellie will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her, but her spirit will live on through the many memories shared and the love she bestowed upon her family and friends. As Nellie would say, that’s the story morning glory. May she rest in eternal peace.
