Obituary of Eunice Steininger

"Eunice (Cruickshank) Steininger, 86, of Mountain Ave died Friday at Holyoke Medical Center. Born in Holyoke December 10, 1919, she was the daughter of the late Daniel and Elsie Cruickshank. She grew up in Holyoke and was educated in Holyoke, graduating from Holyoke High School in 1937 and Holyoke Hospital School of Nursing in 1941. Eunice has lived in S. Hadley since 1945. She served her country during WWII as a nurse and was honorably discharged as a Second Lieutenant. A natural caregiver, Eunice worked as an RN at Holyoke Hospital from 1945 – 1977 and also spent many years as a private duty nurse in the area. She was a member of the Jehovah Witness Assembly in Holyoke for 35 years, and participated in the Council on Aging for over 20 years. She was predeceased by her husband Otto D. Steininger in 1985, along with her sister Medora Cruickshank. She will be missed by her four children, Sandra VanBatavia of Boyden, IA, Douglas of Wakefield, Alison Smith of Holyoke and Daniel of S. Hadley. She also leaves her 12 cherished grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. A celebration of her life will be held Tuesday evening at 6:30 p.m. at the Beers & Story S. Hadley Funeral Home, 646 Newton Street, (Rte. 116). Calling hours will be Tuesday from 4:00 – 6:30 p.m. A funeral service will be held Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. at the funeral home followed by burial in Forestdale Cemetery, Holyoke.
