Obituary of Rene A. Hetu

"Rene A. Hetu, 82, died on Tuesday, January 5, 2010, at the Holyoke Medical Center, surrounded by his family. He was born in Chicopee on Sept. 13, 1927, to the late Albert and Albina (Deslauriers) Hetu. He was a longtime Granby resident, having moved back to Chicopee in his later years. Rene attended the Chicopee schools, and he was a disabled veteran of World War II. He retired from Advance Offset Corporation in 1984, where he was the supervisor of the chemical department. Previously, he was employed as a salesman at a local jewelry store and at Dinn Brothers Trophies. After his retirement, Rene was a volunteer for Kate's Kitchen in Holyoke. In recognition of his volunteer efforts, he received the Outstanding Service and Support Award from the Providence Ministries for the Needy in 1992. Throughout his life, he showed compassion towards others and a great love of animals. Rene had a zest for life, which was expressed in his many interests and hobbies. He was a skilled carpenter, having built the family home in his 20's; tackled piano lessons in his 30's; developed a passion for golf in his 40's; and took karate lessons in his 50's. He was also an artist who painted New England landscapes. Above all, his greatest joy in life was being a wonderful "Pepere" to his grandchildren. He leaves his wife of 59 years, Helen (O'Connor); two daughters, Teresa Abbate and husband, Charles, of Palmer, and Marie McDonald and husband, Bob, of Sarasota, FL; three grandchildren, Daniel and Mary Livingstone, and Alec McDonald; and many caring nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Estelle Deslauriers, and his brother, Norbert Hetu. In keeping with Rene's wishes, there will be no calling hours, and burial will be private. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Kate's Kitchen, 51 Hamilton St., Holyoke, MA, 01040, for helping others in need, or to the Holyoke Medical Center Annual Appeal, Development Office, 20 Hospital Drive, Holyoke, MA, 010 40 in appreciation of their kindness and support. Please pray for the happy repose of his good soul."
