I always liked a definition of humility as strength under control. This defined Lloyd. His love and passion for music, for students, education, family. In a word..relationships. It's not often you can find a gifted teacher, musician and human being in one person. If love is seeking another person's highest good. Then he did this as he served the students and people he came in contact with. I don't think life gets any better that the life he had chosen. He was a teacher, student, musican, composer and friend. He spread the joy of sharing music and its healing powers. Thanks for giving us pause to think about the frugality of life. To be thankful and grateful, and to appreciate who we have while we have them. You will be missed. The Baker Family George, Carin, Hannah and Elena

I will always remember the last visit we had where he took us to the family plot in the cemetery and as we walked through he told us excerpts of family history, who was married to whom and children they had. I will never forget all the Thanksgivings we celebrated as a family, the walks in the woods, the crochet, and fresh garden vegetables from the Armstrong garden. Lloyd's love for music and for his niece and her family, and for his Mother, and brothers was the light his life gave to the world. May it continue to shine in our hearts and minds. The unexpected size of our Horn section, with 6 members, was always a thing of pride for our band directors. Mr Armstrong would always encourage us when things would get difficult and it was because of him that I stayed with the French Horn til I graduated from BHS in 2008. I met Lloyd Armstrong through a community of people who shared a common interest in the music of the Japanese shakuhachi and a love for learning to play the instrument. Lloyd and I practiced together on many occasions. Once, as a study, we were assigned by our teacher, Nakajima sensei, to compose a short piece for the shakuhachi. Lloyd composed an inspiring little piece of music entitled "Dragonfly Dream". Do dragonflies have dreams? Who would even contemplate such a thought? Obviously, Lloyd would. I came to know Lloyd as a quiet character but with a quick wit and an understated sense of humor. He could go unnoticed in the background of a room full of conversation until releasing a perfectly timed gem of a comical quip. And his humor was never at the expense of others. So, who would contemplate the thought of a dreaming dragonfly? Only a kind and gentle soul such as Lloyd.

I first met Lloyd when I joined the Belchertown Community Band. Lloyd was a tireless supported of music and musicians in Belchertown. When I needed help he came through for me. Lloyd graciously accepted praise, but didn't seem to seek recognition. When my daughter started in the CHCS Band two years ago Lloyd was on hand in the first few weeks to help the students and their families get organized and energized. Now she is in the JBMS Band and had only a few weeks with Lloyd as her conductor. I inadvertently became a chaperone for the JBMS in the Belchertown Fair Parade in September, and was impressed by how well he had taught the band to play and march. Im grateful for the time Lloyd was with meas a musician, a conductor, a teacher and a friend. I hope I can continue to participate in music in Belchertown and promote music in the community and schools to honor Lloyd and fulfill those dreams he worked so hard for.

He was an education major and I was a performance major, but quickly discovered through Lloyd that my true passion was teaching. Twenty six years later I'm still at it. One of my favorite memories with Lloyd was that we were both sort of geeky, and instead of going out on a Friday night in search of girls, we'd buy a six pack of cheap beer and sit in our room (808) and sight sing together most of the evening. May flights of angels sing you to your rest old friend. J.R. Ankney Berklee '81

I first met Mr. Armstrong when I was in 5th grade and he has been a part of my life and music ever since. He was always there with words of encouragement, a warm smile, and the willingness to help us learn. It has been many years since I was his student, but I still feel his influence. Mr. A. may be gone, but he will never be forgotten.

If you looked up "a good man" in the dictionary, you would find Lloyd Armstrong's photograph. A kinder man could not be found. His passion for music was second only to his nurturing care of his students. Thank you Lloyd, for being such a good man for our children.

My name is Jack Carpenter, I am 10 years old. This previous summer I joined the Belchertown Community Band. I was lucky enough to sit next to Mr. Armstrong. Even though the music was hard for me, Mr. Armstrong helped me a lot. He is the main reason that I can play "The Star Spangled Banner". He is also one of the reasons I did not quit, despite the hard music. He was a great saxaphone player and even better friend. I was lucky to know him.

I was in the Belchertown Middle School band and associated Jazz Band, with Mr Armstrong our music teacher. I'll never forget his kind and gentle demeanour, and his deep love of music. I just came across this after listening to Yanni's Live at the Acropolis - I recall he enjoyed Yanni too, and referred to him during one recital. RIP old friend

Lloyd was my college roommate at Berklee starting in 1976. We were the best of friends for two years-inseparable in many ways. Lloyd inspired me to take up teaching as a career.
