Obituary of Edward Linwood Thompson

"Aiken, SC, Edward Linwood Thompson, 89, of Aiken, formerly of Palmer passed away on March 19, 2005 after a battle with cancer. Linwood was born in East Longmeadow on November 21, 1915, the son of Harold and Madeline (Adams) Thompson. He was raised in Palmer and was a 1934 graduate of Palmer High School. After graduating, he attended Bliss Electrical School, worked for Star Electric and then went into the family business with his father who was a self-employed electrical contractor. Linwood later went to work at Sanderson and Macleod in Palmer until his retirement in 1980. Upon retiring, he relocated to Zephyrhills, FL until January 2005 when he and his wife Dorothy moved to Aiken to be closer to their son. While in Palmer, he was the Superintendent of Fire Alarms, a water commissioner, and served as the President of Quaboag Country Club in Monson. He was also active in the Muscular Dystrophy drive, having lost a son to the disease. Lin was an avid golfer, reader and enjoyed traveling. He and his wife, Dorothy, drove across the country 16 times and made many trips to the Northeast from Florida to visit their grandchildren and great-granddaughters. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Dorothy (Mercer) Thompson of Aiken, a son; Linwood Thompson of Aiken, a brother; Harold Thompson of Long Branch, WA, a grand-son; Mark Styspeck and his wife Phyllis of Sunderland, MA, a grand-daughter; Ann Marie Fecteau and her husband Maurice of Gray, ME, and great-granddaughters Kristen and Jill Fecteau. In addition to his parents, he was pre-deceased by a son, Jeffrey (1963), a daughter, Susan Styspeck (1970) and a sister, Catherine Lincoln. Another sister, Jessica Hurd of Seal Beach CA passed away in April 2005. There will be a memorial service in his memory on August 15 at 1:00 p.m. at the Beers & Story Funeral Home in Palmer. Friends may pay respects to the family beginning at 12:00 p.m. prior to the service. For those wishing, memorial donations may be directed to the American Cancer Society.
