Obituary of John M. Mullins

"South Hadley, John M. Mullins, 90, died peacefully in on Saturday July 11, 2009, at Loomis House in Holyoke. Born on May 2, 1919, in New York City, he was the son of George and Hazel (Provence) Mullins. Jack earned his BA in Mathematics from Columbia University in 1941. It was at this time that he met the love of his life and soon to be wife, Alice Newton Drury. He proudly served his country during WWII in the Navy, obtaining the rank of Lt. Commander. The family relocated to New York City after the war and Jack began his 16 year career at Columbia University. As the family began to grow they moved to Demarest, NJ where they thrived with Jack contributing his numerous talents to the community, including a 9-year term on the Northern Valley Regional High School Board of Education. In 1961 Jack took a position with the College Entrance Examination Board where he served for the remainder of his career. He also served as a trustee of the American University in Paris for 35 years, allowing him and Alice to travel extensively abroad. Their growing international perspectives and interests, along with their commitment to excellence in education, would long thereafter play out in their sons' lives and careers. They eventually relocated to Loomis Village and Jack took an active role in the residents' association, serving as vice president during his first year at Loomis Village. He later served two years as president, several years on the finance committee, and a term on the trustees' philanthropy committee. He remained interested in the educational issues of the day, and enjoyed following the world of professional tennis on TV and attending the theater. He will be deeply missed by his wife of 67 years, Alice D. Mullins, along with his three sons, John and his wife Donna of Golden, CO, Ross and his wife Maria of Madrid, Spain, and David and his wife Betsy of Amherst, MA. His seven grandchildren and 4 3/4 great grandchildren also survive him. All services are private and Beers and Story South Hadley Funeral Home have been entrusted with arrangements. Memorial donations in Jack's name may be made to the Loomis Village Fellowship Fund, 20 Bayon Dr., So. Hadley, MA 01075 or Holyoke VNA and Hospice, 113 Hampden St., Holyoke, MA. 01040. "
