Obituary of George Babe E. Smith

"Palmer, George E. "Babe" Smith, 83, of Baptist Hill Rd, died Wednesday at Wing Memorial Hospital. Born in Warren, July 11, 1920, he was the son of the late John and Martha (Thompson) Smith. A lifelong resident of the Palmer area, he was a graduate of Palmer High School. George served his country in the Army during WWII and was a member of the American Legion Post #130 in Palmer. He was the produce manager at the former A&P Store in Palmer for 37 years before retiring in 1982 and was a long time member of the Second Congregational Church. "Babe" was predeceased by his wife Dorothy (Haraghey) Smith in 1992 and a son Randy in 1996. He will be deeply missed by his son George L. and his wife, Linda of Palmer, and his daughter Linda J. Smith of Palmer, along with his six grandchildren and three great grandchildren. He also leaves a sister in law Rose Smith of Palmer and many nieces and nephews. George was also predeceased by seven siblings. Funeral services will be Tues, May 25 at 10:00 a.m. in the Beers & Story Palmer Funeral Home, followed by burial in Hillside Cemetery in Monson.
