Obituary of Mabel Jordan Poitras

"Holyoke-Mabel (Jordan) Poitras, 86, of St. Jerome Ave. died March 20, 2004 with her daughter by her side. Born June 6, 1918, she was the daughter of the late Albert and Josephine (Lynch) Jordan. Born and raised in Palmer, she graduated from Palmer High School before attending and graduating from Mt. Greylock School of Nursing. Mabel later moved to Cranbury, NJ and graduated from Middlesex County College in Edison, NJ with an Associates Degree in nursing. Continuing with her education, she received her BA in Health Education from Jersey City State College. Mabel was a school nurse in Monroe Township, NJ and retired in 1978. She also was a Girl Scout leader of Troop 49 in Milltown, NJ. Deeply involved in her faith, Mrs. Poitras was a communicant of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Holyoke and a former member of St. Cecilia’s Church in Wilbraham, where she was an officer in the Women’s Club. Mabel was predeceased by her husband Ernest in 1993. She is survived by her children Joanne Poitras with whom she lived, Jacqueline D’Allessandra of Monmouth Junction, NJ, and David and his wife Lisa Poitras of Baytown, TX. Mabel also leaves a sister Winfred Couture of Palmer, 14 grandchildren and many great grandchildren. She will be buried from her family parish, St. Thomas the Apostle Church in Palmer with a mass of Christian Liturgy Thursday at 11:30 a.m. Burial will follow at the parish cemetery. A calling hour will precede the mass Thursday morning from 10-11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Mabel’s name may be made to Our Lady of Guadalupe, 435 Maple St., Holyoke, MA 01104"
