Mrs. Johnson was a pioneer and a great lady! I was a student at the Center School in S.H. when she started the P.E. program there in the '50s. There was nothing "warm and fuzzy" about her--I remember her shouting orders like a drill sargeant--but we all respected her. She made us exercise and sweat and I learned that it was O.K. for a girl to to that. I loved feeling strong and running fast. I believe that she was responsible for my life-long enjoyment of exercising outdoors. She touched many lives. I will hold you all in my prayers, at this difficult time.

Mrs. Johnson was a wonderful, caring individual. She was an intelligent lady who knew how to get things done. We appreciate the efforts she put into saving the environment. We learned a great deal from her. South Hadley is a better place as a result of her actions. She will be fondly remembered.

Working for Betty at the Christmas tree farm is one of my fondest memories. It is regretful that she is not around to make similar memories for others.

Having shared a tent with Betty as she led me,a novice camper, on a month-long trek through Alaska, I can attest to her knowledge, strength and courage as a leader and to her joy in life and her sense of fun and adventure as a companion. Her self discipline and right living (albeit at times difficult to live with) were and remain an inspiration to me. I learned so much from Betty during our many other experiences together and am fortunate to have memories strong enough to keep her with me forever. She was a towering personage. Betty shared with me how much she loved each member of her wonderful family and my heart goes out to each of you with sympathy and affection. The poet Yeats wrote: Though the great song returns no more There's keen delight in what we have: The rattle of pebbles on the shore, Under the receding wave.

I certainly remember Betty on the one occasion that I met her, when she visited The Packer Collegiate Institute, her alma mater, in 2001. Betty recalled her days as a tennis player at Packer, and talked about moving from tennis to ping-pong at her retirement facility. She was bright, and had a wonderful twinkle in her eye. The Packer community mourns the loss of a spunky gal who clearly loved life.

To Betty Johnson's Family I am the son of Elizabeth (Libby) Emsley, who passed away on Oct 23rd, 2002, and who also was a friend of Betty. I personally never met Betty, but my Mother spoke very highly and lovingly of her. My parents (Charles and Libby) grew Christmas trees, so maybe that's how they met. My Family and I send our condolences and wish you and yours the best.
