Obituary of John R. Ahearn

"John (Jake) R. Ahearn Clinton/ Palmer, MA John (Jake) R. Ahearn, 84, died peacefully on March 1, 2008.He was born in Palmer, Massachusetts on December 7, 1923, the son of John R. and Mary Ahearn. Jake graduated from Palmer High School Class of 1941 and from American International College, Springfield, MA, in 1950. Jake was a US Army veteran serving during WWII in the China Burma India Theatre from 1942-1946 and was always willing to regale you with a war story. He married Jean Kendall on February 2, 1950. Throughout their fifty-eight year union the couple shared a deep and abiding devotion to each other. He was a member of St. Mary's Church, the American Legion and VFW. He was past Commander for the Smalley Brothers VFW Post #6123 in Windsor Locks, CT. Jake taught in various school systems including Palmer, Mass for over 30 years. He enjoyed attending sporting events and watching his grandsons play hockey, soccer and track for Clinton. He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Jean Ahearn of Clinton, NY, as well as his children and their spouses, including his five daughters, Eileen Gleason of Clinton, NY; Kathleen O'Dea of West Roxbury, MA; Colleen Scaffa of Medford, NJ; Maureen Reidy of Holliston, MA; and Erin Page of Spencer, MA; and his son, Michael Ahearn of Brimfield, MA. He also leaves behind his brother Emmett Ahearn of Palmer, MA; his twelve grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He is predeceased by his son Patrick Ahearn and his sister Eileen Page. The family is grateful to Dr. Jorge Ferriero and Dr. Mark Hobaica for their support and compassion. The family also has a sincere appreciation for the staff of St. Luke's for the care given to Jake and his family. Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 8, 2008 at 11:30 a.m. in St. Thomas Church in Palmer, MA with burial in St. Thomas Cemetery. Calling hours are Friday from 4:00-7:00pm at Beers & Story Palmer Funeral Home, 1475 N. Main St, Palmer, MA.
