Obituary of John Anthony Shutty

" John A. Shutty, 89, of Bay Rd. died Monday at Northampton Nursing Home. Born in Hastings, PA, on May 23, 1912, he was the son of the late Aloysius and Anna (Zeglan) Shutty. He has lived in Belchertown for 41 years, living previously in Holyoke and South Hadley. As a teenager, he worked as a coal miner in Pennsylvania. He retired in 1967 after 27 years of being employed at American Bosch in Springfield. He also was a part-time bartender for many years. John was an avid trout fisherman, candle pin bowler, and an accomplished amateur artist. He was also a communicant of St. Francis Church and active in the Belchertown Senior Center. He leaves his wife of 63 years, Eugenia C. (Okseniak) of Belchertown, one daughter, Ann Maggs and her husband, Walter Carroll of Amherst. He is also survived by three sisters, Mary Shutty of Hastings, PA, Anna Kertis of New Cambria, PA, Victoria Kostek of of Berkley Heights, NJ, one brother Michael Shutty of Hampton, VA, three grandchildren, Judy Maggs, of Natick, MA, Steven Maggs, of Acton, MA, and Nancy Maggs of Dorchester, MA as well as two great-grandchildren, Natalie Porter Maggs and Sam Porter Maggs, and many nieces and nephews. Burial will be private. Calling hours have been omitted. A memorial mass will be held at a later date. "
