Claire's warm welcome to the French Department is one of my most vivid memories of my first visit to Mount Holyoke on a frigid day in January 1975. When I began teaching the following fall, Claire's true contribution to the department became apparent: through her tact, generous spirit, and social intelligence, she kept a disparate group of faculty functioning smoothly. Several years later, when I was department chair, I quickly understood that I could not do the job without her. I don't think there was a single human skill Claire did not possess. We all loved her, even the most cantankerous among us. I've missed her deeply since she retired, and I will miss her even more now that she is no longer with us. My husband Jim, who knew and appreciated Claire as well, joins me in sending condolences and wishes for all possible comfort to her family.

I joined the Mount Holyoke College French department in September 1990 and quickly discovered that the best thing about that department was Claire. I liked her from the start but soon came to love and admire her. I would always ride by her house and admire the huge mound of lovingly tended pansies surrounding her stature of the Blessed Virgin. In later years, I would see her working at Andrew's and we would chat and she would hold my hands, not letting go for long minutes. When she was not working, I would see that same old statue of the BVM, on the side of the house and think, "Claire's house!"
They just don't make them like Claire Benoit anymore. I will think of her often, always with a smile, and will carry her in my heart.
Warmest wishes for strength and peace to her entire family. And deepest thanks to you for sharing her with the rest of us.
May flights of angels sing her to her rest.
