Obituary of Edward G. Smith
Edward George Smith, 89, of South Hadley, MA passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his loving family on Thursday, April 1, 2021.
Son of the late Edward George and Helen (Grady) Smith, Sr., he was born in Holyoke on March 7, 1932. After graduating from Holyoke Catholic High School, Edward went on to obtain his Master's and CAGS Degrees in education from Westfield State College and worked for many years as a teacher and then principal, most recently as principal for Munger Hill School in Westfield.
He also proudly served his country in the United States Navy as a Navel Airman Mechanic Third Class in Malta during the Korean War (1951-1955) followed by serving as a reservist for 4 years.
Ed loved all things Irish, listening to Irish music year round! He was an avid Boston sports fan; Patriots Red Sox, Bruins and Celtics. Outside of family and his school, Ed loved to spend time gardening. He had the greenest grass in the neighborhood and the most beautiful flower beds.
Ed will be missed by all who knew and loved him, including his dedicated wife of 68 years, Jean (Whitenett) Smith; his children Daniel T. Smith and his wife Ila of Holyoke, MA; Patricia L. Smith of South Hadley, MA, Kevin C. Smith and his wife Marcia of Hartford, CT; and his son Michael E. Smith, former Superintendent of South Hadley schools who predeceased his father and his widow, Caroline. Ed’s many grandchildren are Rebecca, Alison, Megan, Jeremy, Heidi, Casey, Michael, Ryan, Alexandra, and Hadley; his great-grandchildren Lucas, Logan, Aiden, Cameron, Savita, Liam, Teddy, Daniel and Quinn; his sisters, Carol Cavanaugh, Judy Rosch her husband Francis, and Elizabeth Ann Berniquer; as well as many extended family members and friends.
A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be private for immediate family on Wednesday, April 7, 2021 at 11:00am. For those wishing to attend services remotely, please visit https://client.tribucast.com/tcid/37694718 prior to the start of the service.
Rites of Committal and Military Honors will be held at the convenience of Ed’s family. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the National Kidney Foundation and the American Heart Association.
