I am so sorry and deeply saddened. My first college class was with Don at Asnuntuck Community College, while still a senior in high school in Spring 2012. I will never forget my initial impression of college academics, his warm demeanor and how that came across when you spoke with him. He even called me back during work to discuss a very difficult reading by William James, his tenderhearted spirit over the phone came across like a kind, reassuring embrace. That it’s going to be OK. I often think about what I have read from various faiths in World Religions class, and even make parallels/contrasts to my own. I love you Don, and can’t wait to see you again, along with my father who took his own life in 2017. RIP, my dear friend.

Don was the best professor I ever had. He taught me everything I needed to know to be successful in both academia and life. I went back to school after losing my father unexpectedly and I confided in Don. He made me understand that I would always have unanswered questions about the passing of my father and helped me make peace with it. He was a special person and I'll never forget him.

I was sorry to read about the passing of Don. My heart goes out to Erica and his siblings and particularly to Theresa who I met in Eugene, Oregon where I first met Don. I remember Theresa worked at Bob’s just down from the house his family rented. I have many memories of Don at South Eugene High School and even more so playing basketball with Don all over town and on the sophomore basketball team. We both shared a passion and love of the game of basketball. Just yesterday before , I knew about his passing, I was telling a story to a co-worker about how Don was able to get us into the UCLA locker room to talk with “Rocket” Rod Foster and Larry Brown before an Oregon game. I have shared other stories about how he got to know and hung out for about a week with Dorian Harwood a Hollywood movie and tv star who had a role in “Personal Best” a movie shot in Eugene, Oregon. Don I introduced me to Dorian and I remember all of us playing basketball together and riding in his black Porsche. Don also became friends with many of the University of Oregon basketball players. My greatest memory will always be the kindness Don, his parents and his basketball team showed me in Colchester, Connecticut just after I had recently been unfairly cut from the varsity basketball team. Don and his family invited me to visit for a week at a time when I was really down, because basketball was my passion at that time in my life. Don and his coach and players allowed me to participate in a full practice with his team. Don and his families kindness along with the teams kindness will never be forgotten. I was not surprised to discover years ago that he had followed an academic path and had become a professor. Don always loved school and had a passion for academics. My father Les Swanson and Don would have deep talks about philosophy that would leave me lost in the discussion. Don had many personal qualities that I respected. Don will always be remembered as someone who was a true genuine kind person who enjoyed engaging with and helping others. He was also assertive and was was not afraid to share his thoughts and ideas with others. I have had few true friends in my life and Don was one of those select friends and I regret losing touch with him even though we had some brief email communication. I will do my best to honor Don’s passing by carrying on the qualities that made him a dear friend and important person who helped shape my life. You will be greatly missed.

So sorry and so sad. My lifelong love of yoga is due to Don. I lived in the same house in grad school, and he would gather up everyone in the morning and teach us yoga. May his spirit still be shedding light on other souls somewhere.
