Thomas Hazen

Obituary of Thomas Weis Duffy Hazen

Thomas Weis Duffy Hazen (Tommy) (TWD) passed away at the age of 58.5 peacefully surrounded by family at his home in Florence Northampton as the sun was setting early in the evening of Saturday August 5, 2023.

TWD was born at Holyoke Hospital on December 27th, 1964. Tommy’s mother Katharine Titherington Hazen passed away late in 2022. Tommy’s father, Thomas Norman Hazen resides at Loomis Village in South Hadley. TWD is also survived by his sister Maria Hazen Lewis and her husband Michael Lewis who resides in New Hope Pennsylvania. Tommy is also survived by his brother John H. Hazen and his wife Gloria Hazen who lives in South Hadley.

Uncle Tommy was adored by his nephews and nieces. He was devoted to them and never missed a birthday party or a holiday. Uncle Tom was a clever gift giver and always came to holiday gatherings with good wine and flowers.

Tom was extremely fond of his long-term devoted friend Loretta Card. Loretta became part of the Hazen family over the last 23 years. Loretta and Tom had a sparky repartee and were the life of family parties including most recently a birthday for Tom Senior at the Boat House in April.

During Tommy’s early childhood the family lived in a big old stucco house at the corner of Madison Avenue and Irving Street in Holyoke. It was a wonderful neighborhood with block after block of kids in almost every house. Kick ball under the street lights was a daily ritual. Riding bikes in the Dingle Bicycle Path was a favorite diversion. Halloween was an epic event. The family moved to South Hadley in late 1970 and Tommy attended the Center School. Tommy ultimately was a graduate of Wilbraham Monson Academy.

Tommy showed a great flair for drawing and painting and was a life-long artist. Tommy produced paintings, greeting cards and T-Shirts for family and friends that were coveted. Tommy was extremely creative and had a sparkling wit and a great sense of humor. He was a lively conversationalist and frequently had Sunday supper with his father at Loomis Village and since COVID at Gloria’s table. Tommy greatly enjoyed the Sunday get-togethers on Cedar Ridge watching Coffee Walk on YouTube and talking cars with John.

Tommy will be greatly missed. A visitation will be held Friday September 29 from 5:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m. at the Beers & Story South Hadley Funeral Home.  A celebration of his spirit will be held on September 30 at 10 a.m. at the funeral home with procession and burial to follow at Forestdale Cemetery.
