Obituary of Mary Elizabeth Flanagan

Mary Flanagan, 89, South Hadley, MA, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Spokane, WA to the late Joseph and Mary (Flanigan) Genaw and raised by her maternal grandparents, Thomas and Elizabeth (Toberty) Flanigan after her mother died from childbirth. She was educated by the Holy Names Sisters of Spokane. Mary leaves her loving husband of 69 years, Andrew Flanagan, her children Maryanne Stefanelli, Margie (Billy) Methot, Kelly (Frank) LaBombard, Maureen (Mark) Dulude, all of South Hadley, Andrew Flanagan of Holyoke and Michael (Anne) Flanagan of Springfield, and her 23 grandchildren and 28 great grandchildren. She is predeceased by her twin sister, Margie (Pete) Cermak of Renton, WA and her brother, William (Judi) Genaw of Ellenton, FL and her grandson, Thomas (Angela) Flanagan of Westfield.

Mary happily devoted her life to her family. She loved the arts and was very musical and loved to sing and play the piano. She and her twin sister, Margie, entertained troops at the USO during WW2, and performed in a private concert at Holy Names College in Spokane where Mary was also Marion Queen. She will be greatly missed.

Calling hours are Friday, December 22nd, 4:00-7:00pm at the Beers & Story South Hadley Funeral Home. A Funeral Mass will be held Saturday, December 23rd at 9:30am at St. Patrick’s Church followed by burial at St. Rose Cemetery in South Hadley. Friends and family are welcome to gather at the funeral home at 8:30am for a funeral procession.
