In late 1977 when a serving Army officer, the Army ordered me to the University of Massachusetts, Amherst to pursue an MBA with Army specified courses to support technical ability for future assignments. In late 1978 I was fortunate to have Professor of Management Thomas M. McAuley as my professor for the capstone policy course.
With his wide-ranging hands-on experience as a military officer and private sector manager and executive leader, I found him to be one of the most valuable people of my experience in an academic setting…an instructor and mentor that knew few peers.
More telling was Professor McAuley’s genuine interest in his students and his approachability and availability. I engaged in more than one discussion with him at a local establishment frequented by faculty and students.
I gained much from this leader and mentor that was applied and passed on to other leaders in my later Army and post Army service. He made a difference, and his leadership legacy continues through many following leaders.

My condolences to the Mcauley family. I recall Tom as the most influential instructor I had while at UMass. His teaching style drew heavily from his own business experience which I found very interesting. I pursued and enjoyed a rewarding career in consumer product sales and marketing, primarily because of Tom. Rest in peace.

I too had Mr. McAuley for two classes at UMass Amherst in the late 70's. He was very insightful and challenging. I would have liked to know him better. I went into Software Architecture and Management and used many of the things Mr. McAuley taught. Rest in peace Mr. McAuley.
