Obituary of Cynthia G. Phelps

Granby, MA- Cynthia Louise (Gallup) Phelps passed at her home on June 6th, 2022 with her husband of 52 years by her side. Born in Holyoke on May 18th, 1943 she was the daughter of William W. and Jean (Valentine) Gallup. A native of Granby, Cynthia was a teacher of Library Science (and Dinosaurs) to all ages. She was an equestrian, conservationist and avid reader with love and respect for children of all ages. She was educated in Granby Schools, South Hadley High School, Mount Holyoke College with a B.A. in English and The University of California at Berkeley with a M.A. in Library Science and education. She taught and worked in Otis, MA, Marin County CA, Bristol, CT, East Hartford, CT, the Mount Holyoke College Library and as the teaching librarian at Hatfield Elementary and Smith Academy in Hatfield, MA. She caused the permanent conservation of more than 200 Acres of forests in Granby. Cynthia was a member of the Retired Mass. Teachers Assn., All Saints Church, South Hadley, The Granby Preservation Society, and the Mary Lyon Society of Mount Holyoke College. Cynthia will be dearly missed by her husband of 52 years, Gary R. Phelps, her sons Jared W. Phelps of Granby and George R. Phelps of Chatham, NY and her dear granddaughter Fiona Rose Phelps. Cynthia is also survived by cousins Joseph Watson of Leister, VT, Judith Snyder of Ludlow, and Sydney Snyder of Granby as well as many nieces and nephews in CT.
